‘The Air‘ by Winter Villains sounds like it could be sung by Captain Ahab and his crew, it has a hymnal atmosphere and seems like a song that’s been passed down from generation to generation and remembered on the strength of its melody and words. Said melody lends itself to the beautiful harmonies upon which a story of promise and regret glides and though the lyrics hold emotional weight the song seems weightless, free from heavy instrumentation it floats haunting and ghost-like. I am sure the fact that this song has provoked me to write swathes of adjectives relating to the air is no mistake because there is a clear focus on the creation of atmosphere. ‘The Air’ is a consistent meditation on its subject matter, an example of a feeling crafted into the song and delivered fluently and with candid feeling. The video is great too, fantastically shot and perfectly in tune with the sentiment of the song. I have to thank Winter Villains for making my hangover a touch more tolerable, I would raise a glass but a mug of tea would probably be a more accurate metaphor.
