My favourite thing about instrumental artists (Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, Germany Germany) is that by losing the vocals and lyrics the music emerges and floats. It rides its own wave. Any live video of a band playing will focus almost constantly on the singer, maybe with the occasional group shot or ultra close-up of a guitar’s pickups. Instrumentals don’t fuck about with Liam Gallagher’s face or Thom Yorke’s quivering lips and fingers. No human error, no centre stage, just an open and raw music. Last summer in Europe a friend and I spent an evening watching a rendition of genuinely great classical music and as we walked we both admitted we had each ended up thinking about a girl. Now you can either interpret this to mean that instrumental songs are vague and struggle to get your attention or you could say that one of the best love songs I have listened to was performed by 5 men from Prague who never opened their mouths. I guess you would have to ask Dvorak.

 

Johnny Vancouver has all my favourite ingredients for an instrumental: A ticking, eyes closed, bass guitar ably assisted by the sidestepping, almost cowbell sounding, drums which start rolling and filling more and more in a steady panic as the songs grows. The lead section goes from half-awake keys with a clean guitar exploring and pulling apart the sections and melodies before confidence gets the better and a rushing cascade of fighter jets come out joined at the wings in symmetry. I think most post-rock usually has a sculpted, perfected feel to it but this live recording is a bit different to that, still works.

Really REALLY wish they would change the song title.
