My music taste and listening, has, over the last couple of years, leaned towards more electronic music, house and techno producers. This has lead me to great music and more often when listening to house or techno it’s a given that I will be listening to older stuff found on YouTube. However, at the same time it’s meant I’ve forgotten about the ‘alternative’ artists and bands I would listen to all the time before. Whilst finishing university and being unemployed for the last few months I’ve taken to using Spotify again. Although I don’t agree with the fact that musicians get paid very little for each play, I do believe it is a great tool for people to discover new music , and in my case, reconnect with the old. Destroyer was one of those bands I’d just forgotten about after loving ‘Destroyer’s Rubies’ and I can’t believe it took me so long to listen to 2011’s Kaputt, which is incredible (and now one of my favourite albums) and the track Suicide Dream for Kara Walker is just brilliantly wonderful. Then there’s Mice Parade. I first heard about Mice Parade at least five years ago by chance on Myspace. A few days ago FatCat Records added a few of Mice Parade’s tracks to their Soundcloud, reminding me of their brilliance. Finding new music is great, but discovering older music is sometimes even better.
