I have Drowned in Sound to thank for discovering Hookworms as they gave their ‘Pearl Mystic’ album 10/10, naturally I felt this warranted a listen and it certainly did. ‘In Our Time’ reminds you of how important music can be, sprawling across five minutes it begins by building a wall of sound and then lets it rupture and crumble to the floor or beneath the waves, distorted, gnarled and washed out…it makes you feel like you’re floating on a lilo in the midday sun after a flood. The persistent pysch-rock riffing dances and flickers about the track, it is at once enchanting a sexy. A fantastic track.
Second is footstomping, wild rock n roll, in the vein of iggy, the Kinks and the MC5. Black Manila are making perfect fantastic guitar music…the voice sounds like sawdust and whisky and the simple chords have an undeniable swag and strut. Sure i’m a sucker for anything that captures my love of 60’s 70’s guitar bands and these guys are doing it rather damn well. File next to Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dandy Warhols and The Velvet Underground. Head over to their bandcamp for free downloads!
