Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros have covered John Denver, in situations where you want to speak with confidence on covers it helps if you have knowledge of the artist covered, but alas mine is incredibly limited. I like this cut though, it has a sort of cinematic scope and is so willfully contra modern musical trends that you at the very least have to admire it. I also like the restlessness of it. This track sounds tireless and frenetic, especially towards the crescendo which grabs you by the neck as if you haven’t been paying enough attention. I also stuck on Andrew in Drag by The Magnetic Fields (still a better love story than twilight) because I always get the two bands confused. FOR SHAME!
Second we have In Sequins by Decades. This certainly has something of the Galaxie 500/Echo & the Bunnymen about it. I really like the guitars, some sounds seem inseparable from certain adjectives…You hear those clean, echoey guitars and you feel prompted to say dreamy and ethereal…there is also something a bit dark about the track, the fact that its so difficult to decipher whats being said and to pull apart instruments it seems like a trip, where nothing really makes linear sense. This is backed up by the video, with its reflective surfaces, mirrored images and singular use of colour…its fairly disorientating in a good way. I like it.
