Here at the Exeter HQ of A Pocket Full of Seeds there’s been a track niggling around the office of my bedroom, nagging for another play, insisting upon some listening attention. The track is We Prefer It in the Dark by Bat and Ball. The track is earnest and minimal, vocals over drawn back beats. There is a careful craft to this sort of sparse electronic/indie pop that has been increasing in popularity since The XX’s debut. However the lyrics here are delivered with a lot more umph than any XX track, Abi Sinclair (who I am assuming is the lead singer) cuts through the bass lead verse with a voice that sounds untouched in production which gives the impression that the band could be playing in your living room, the purity of voice also gives honesty to the words she’s singing. There’s a couple of really nice harmonies such as the repeat question ‘Whats in your eyes?’, where a distorted guitar strikes down like a pendulum suggesting the confusion of the narrator. Then it slips with ease back into the sparse arrangement of the previous verses and it is such fluidity which is the songs biggest strength as few bands can fill and empty the mix with such a natural touch. Fantastic.
Second I’ve stuck on a song from my band, this will cost me my job.
