After being on holiday in a derelict and barren part of Spain I return again with three wildly different songs.
I start with Strangeheart Five Two which is in fact a cover of 1920’s song Has Anybody Seen My Gal. This is a modern and polished take with some 80’s inflections like the vocoder harmonies. Often quirky covers can be positively irksome but rather than inducing vomit I was nodding my head contently. Ultimately this is a cracking cover with plenty of disco possibilites and yes it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but my mate hates David Bowie and my cousin thinks Bananarama are musical figureheads…opinions will always be split.
Next we have The Baltic States with Kontrol. This band blends minimal techno with soaring vocal melodies. I bet a lot of people read Techno and thought oh shit but the track feels at the same time mystical and cathartic and furthermore managed to avoid sounding like the sort of music played in a shop that sells novelty bongs. Lastly at the top we have my friend Fugitive Orchestra’s track Retain Some Affection for Hometown Scars which frankly is the best song title I have seen this year.
