Dripping drains and frosted windows have now taken over my house. Tight bank balances don’t help, implementing authoritarian embargoes on our heating. It’s been almost a month since our house was packed to bursting with people to see Math Rock gems and the steam which rose from everyone’s shoulders seems very distant. Now it’s frozen words that fall off our tongues. At these times I fall back on West-Coast Hip-Hop to take me away from all the cold.
Zeroh has been alleviating most of these pains. Kicking it around LA he joins a whole host of ambient Hip-Hop rappers and producers making heavily swung jazz influenced beats, yet combines this with poetic, rhythmic lyrics effortlessly falling out of his deep dark voice. Barkpench is the track which has stood out for me. Echoing its eponymous spoonerised location, the trumpet sample and tweeting birds instantly set you down next to Zeroh as he talks about his future in the music industry, and his thoughts and doubts in entering it. His rapping is deeply introspective and philosophical: on FKIT he references Aristotle’s Poetics which for a Classics graduate is super exciting, and by the end of a song you feel as though you know him, despite not knowing anything about him – similar to Earl’s new track ‘Chum‘.
There have been whisperings that he is the elusive Captain Murphy, amongst Golf Wangers screaming ‘Tyler’ and ‘Earl’ and Pitchforkers calling out ‘FlyLo’. In all truth the LA sounding Captain Murphy could be anyone. The vocals are bashed about with filters and effects that any of the above names are both plausible and implausible at the same time, and as such he taunts internet theorists: speculating my identity, good luck you’ll never find me. Excitingly CM’s mixtape ‘Du∆lity’ is coming out this Thursday (15th!).
Anyhow, enjoy these few cuts. Hopefully Zeroh’ll put out another mixtape sometime soon, but if you wanna hear some more head over here.
